Bricks in Space

LEGO Designer: Andrew Harkins (KingsKnight)

It’s cliche, but I’ve always loved Lego since I was a kid. It’s art, technical, troubleshooting, and therapy all rolled into one. I’ve also always been a lover of science and space. Growing up the Space Shuttle was my generation’s iconic spacecraft, and I’ve always had a soft spot for it. One of my first favorite Lego sets was the 1682 Space Shuttle. I still have it on my shelf to this day.

More recently, in 2015, I started making my own large scale Shuttle when set 60080 came out. In the middle of my build, Lego Ideas released the amazing Saturn V. I knew immediately I would have to adjust the scale of my Shuttle to match. Initially it was just for myself, a true labor of love. But with the prodding of friends, I posted it to Lego Ideas and soon after got 10,000 votes.

Unfortunately, it didn’t pass review. A few years later I had the honor of displaying it in the Lego House in Denmark. But as I said, it is a labor of love, regardless of whether it’s a real set or not. I hope to share that with others who have the same passion as me. And I love that there are so many out there. The 1:110 space community has shown itself to be extensive and passionate and I love being a part of it.
