The Tiny Tim rocket booster was repurposed in the late 1940s as a first-stage booster for the WAC Corporal rocket in early high-altitude and atmospheric research missions. Originally developed during World War II as an air-to-ground missile, the Tiny Tim’s role in the WAC Corporal program showcased its adaptability as a high-thrust solid rocket booster.

The Tiny Tim was used to provide the initial thrust necessary to lift the WAC Corporal off the ground and accelerate it to sufficient speed. This was crucial because the WAC Corporal’s liquid-fueled engine required the rocket to be in motion before ignition to stabilize its trajectory.

The WAC Corporal was mounted atop the Tiny Tim booster in a two-stage configuration. The Tiny Tim would fire first, providing approximately 100,000 pounds of thrust for a short duration (~1 second). After burning out, the Tiny Tim would be jettisoned, and the WAC Corporal’s liquid engine would ignite to carry the payload to higher altitudes.
